I admit.  You can run an internet business from your kitchen table, but a more suitable workspace would help in being efficient and cutting down on distractions.  Your own desk or a designated computer table would work nicely. Include some good lighting and get your workspace organized with places for your notes, paper, printer, and anything else you need to work properly.  A phone may or may not be included.  It’s best to cut out any distractions, so close the door.

The second key is to set aside a certain amount of time each day for actually working your business.  It could be the same time, 5 or 6 days a week.  It could be a block of time that shifts each day.  Depending on your schedule, this block of time could be in the am one day, the pm another.  If you have a tough time with self discipline, a set time of day may work out better for you.

The third key is to spend your business time working your plan.  You should have a plan.  What is it you are going to do and what are the steps to getting it done?  You may have to do research, write articles, create a blog, create sales funnels, or whatever your plan requires.  If you are not sure of all the steps to take in your plan, take the next step.  In other words, do something.  Often times when you take one step, the next step will become apparent to you.  For an internet home business, you should have a daily focus on making sales.  Don’t waste your time playing with your email or surfing the net.

The fourth key is have a way to measure your progress.  You can tabulate your earnings each day.  You can measure how many articles you wrote and submitted to directories.  You can measure just about anything and everything.  You need to see that you are moving along.  Which leads us into key number 5.

Every so often, reward yourself.  If you hit a sales goal, or get a certain number of articles published, take time out and reward yourself.  It could be a day off, a great meal at a restaurant, or even a few hours on the beach. This will help you stay motivated and work toward bigger and better rewards.

The final key for a successful online home business is to modify your plan as you go.  We all know things don’t always work out as we want them too.  That’s ok because you are flexible and unafraid to change your actions to achieve the end result.  Toss out what isn’t working and add something new.  This may include outsourcing some tasks, or buying software to make things faster and more efficient.  Maybe you need to adjust your work space, or work time.  You modify until you are successful.  You persist until the project is done.  You’ll be happy you did.

I have to admit, I was doing things on the cheap. I put up only 3, maybe 4 pictures where others had 10 or 12.  A lot of the sellers had a buy now button, I didn’t.  Many had great feedback from customers, I had none to start with.

Most of the trains I sold as individual pieces.  As the weeks progressed I began to get feedback from customers and surprisingly, the prices I was selling at were often higher than other, seemingly more experienced sellers.  They certainly had more pictures and feedback than I did, yet I had higher bids.

When it was all over, I ended up with 100% positive feedback and a nice chunk of money.  The key to my succes was in the customer feedback.  Only a few things were important and believe it or not, price was not one of them.

Here is what the customers wanted. 

• The number one factor was that the item bought was as described in my online description.  I told them exactly what they were getting.  I told the truth.
• The second factor was that the items were packed beautifully and securely (thanks to my girlfriend). 
• Third was prompt delivery.  That’s understandable.
• The last item mentioned by many was that we were nice people to deal with.

Which just goes to show, even online, people want to deal with a personality and a nice one at that.  You can take that to the bank.

“having a working knowledge of the tax code.” Huh? If the richest man around needs to know a little about taxes than so do you and I. The second step to success from home becomes the willingness to learn about taxes.
That means good record keeping from day one! Enough said.

3. Here it is. The moment you’ve been dreading. To make it from home you have to be able to sell. Aargh! Choke!  I know what you’re thinking. You hate selling. You don’t know how to sell. You think being a salesman is the lowest form of life. Well, guess what? You’re involved in selling all the time. That’s right, all the time. Whenever you ask someone to do something, you’re selling. When you voice your opinion, you’re selling. When you try to get your kids or your neighbors to see things your way, you’re selling. No big deal. Life is sales. All you are going to do is make it a point to get a little better at it.

4. If you haven’t guessed it from the above two points, working from home means constant education. If you want to be successful you need to be willing to improve yourself and your business skills. Believe me, some people just don’t want to. Others are to arrogant to think they need improvement. Don’t let this be you. There are plenty of books, home study courses, online courses, and personal coaches available to tailor your education to your needs and schedule. Just make it fun for yourself and let your skills separate you from the rest of the pack.

5. The final step is basic and simple. Before you start your business, be sure there’s a market that’s willing to pay for whatever it is you’re doing or selling. Whether your idea or product is new or old, do the research first. Life is too short to waste your time and money on something nobody wants.
